BLOCKING

Definition: This is our first line of defense. Watch the hitters! Timing the hitters armswing and penetrating the net's plane is essential to effective blocking. Control your feet and arms and don't let that ball cross the net. You need to be an intimidating blocker and get your hands on balls.

Key Elements:

1. BLOCK WITH YOUR FEET

  • Use controlled footwork to get your body adjusted to the hitter.
  • Feet should be shoulder width apart and balanced.
  • Toes are pointed to the other side of the net.
  • 2 Kinds of blocking Footwork:
    1. Side Step or Hop- For quick adjustments
    2. Step, Cross, Hop- For longer adjustments(MB)

2. BIG HANDS

  • Spread you fingers to create the billboard.
  • Spread your hands approx. 5-7 inches apart.
  • Take up a lot of space and be intimidating.

3. CONTROL

  • Control your feet, your jump and your press.
  • Avoid be a moving target or a tool! Try not to swing your arm above the net.
